Chapter History

On April 18, 1941, the Petersburg (VA) Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. was chartered with eight chartering members. They were:
Brother John Hunter, initiated 1920 at Mu Chapter, University of Kansas
Brother Thomas Verdell, initiated 1926 at Theta Chapter, Northwestern University
Brother William Thomas Carter, initiated 1929 at the Epsilon Chapter, Lincoln University
Brother Darfes R. Turner
Brother Edward Deedon Alston, initiated 1937 at Alpha Kappa Chapter, North Carolina Central College
Brother Arthur H. “Art” Brown, initiated 1937 at Alpha Phi Chapter of Virginia State College
Brother Joseph W. Brown, initiated 1937 at Alpha Phi Chapter of Virginia State College
Brother Augustus C. Phillips, initiated at Tuskegee Alumni Chapter, Tuskegee, Alabama
During the 1940s, bold and noble Kappa Men began to move to the Petersburg, Virginia area to accept positions at Virginia State College, and Camp Lee as well as further their studies at Bishop Payne Divinity School.

Prior to the 40s, in order to maintain involvement with the Fraternity, the local brothers affiliated with the Alpha Phi Chapter of Virginia State College. So, some of the elder statesmen of the Alpha Phi Chapter, chartered March 30th 1935, felt a separate chapter would better serve Brother Verdell; and Brother John Hunter were charter members of the Alpha Phi Chapter. So you can understand the appeal for an individual chapter would better oblige their needs. The request for an alumni chapter was approved and chartered by the Eastern Province and Kappa Alpha Psi Grand Chapter on April 18th 1941. Grand Polemarch James E. Scott and Eastern Province Polemarch James Cobbs gave the Kappa blessings to the neophyte chapter.
